Alcohol Awareness Month: Raising Awareness about the Dangers of Alcohol Use Among Teens National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism NIAAA

New Mexico has the third-highest number of alcohol-related deaths per capita among all the states; it’s 23.4% higher than Alaska’s per capita death rate, which is the nation’s second-highest. Alcohol-related deaths in Kansas are slightly more likely to involve males and underage drinkers. Florida has an elevated alcohol-related death rate but one of the lowest rates of under-21 deaths. The District of Columbia’s alcohol-related death rate increases faster than any U.S. state’s, and the rate of binge drinkers is very high. By not drinking too much, you can reduce the risk of these short- and long-term health risks.

Drug-Related Deaths

Statistics indicate Georgia has a higher rate of underage drinkers than the majority of states. Delaware’s alcohol-related death rate has skyrocketed over the last few years. Alabama has the third-highest rate of under-21 deaths related to excessive alcohol use. Children aged 17 years and younger are much more likely to live with an alcoholic parent than they are to be diagnosed with a learning disability or ADHD. Alcohol consumption can have an impact not only on the incidence of diseases, injuries and other health conditions, but also on their outcomes and how these evolve over time. A significant proportion of the disease burden attributable to alcohol consumption arises from unintentional and intentional injuries, including those due to road traffic crashes, violence, and suicide. Fatal alcohol-related injuries tend to occur in relatively younger age groups. Most Schedule IV drugs are prescription medications, some of which have been banned by the Food and Drug Administration. There are 250 drugs classified as Schedule I. Some examples of Schedule I drugs include ecstacy, heroin, synthetic heroin, LSD, marijuana, and peyote.

Individual factors include age, gender, family circumstances and socio-economic status. Although there is no single risk factor that is dominant, the more vulnerabilities a person has, the more likely the person is to develop alcohol-related problems as a result of alcohol consumption. Poorer individuals experience greater health and social harms from alcohol consumption than more affluent individuals.

Underage Alcohol Abuse

A  causal relationship has been established between harmful drinking and incidence or outcomes of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV. Whilst the World Health Organization (WHO) and most national guidelines typically quantify one unit of alcohol as equal to 10 grams of pure alcohol, the metric used as a ‘standard measure’ can vary across countries. Although those in lower income or educational status groups often drink less overall, they are more likely to have lower-frequency, higher-intensity drinking patterns. Overall, these groups drink less, but a higher percentage will drink heavily when they do.
